A recent California-based study has uncovered a strong link between pesticides and autism. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, MIND Institute examined associations between specific classes of pesticides, including organophosphates, pyrethroids and carbamates, applied during participants pregnancies. The data revealed pregnant women who live in close proximity to fields and farms where chemical pesticides are applied experience a 66 percent increased risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder or developmental delay.

“We mapped where our study participants lived during pregnancy and around the time of birth. In California, pesticide applicators must report what they’re applying, where they’re applying it, dates when the applications were made and how much was applied,” Hertz-Picciotto said. “What we saw were several classes of pesticides more commonly applied near residences of mothers whose children developed autism or had delayed cognitive or other skills.”

The study indicates that women who are pregnant should take special care to avoid contact with agricultural chemicals whenever possible. Different classes of pesticides had different effects. Organophosphates, particularly chlorpyrifos applications during the second trimester, were associated with an elevated risk of autism. Pyrethroids were moderately associated with autism, and carbamates were associated with developmental delay.

Approximately 200 million pounds of pesticides are applied in California each year. Chlorpyrifos, the pesticide most strongly linked to autism is applied to crops across the United States.

Researcher Irva Hertz-Picciotto cautions that we should find ways to reduce pesticide exposure, especially for pregnant women and young children. “We need to open up a dialogue about how this can be done, at both a societal and individual level,” she says.

Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed sodium and sugar levels in 1,074 infant and toddler dinners, snacks, fruits, vegetables, dry cereals, juices and desserts. Not only was the processed food heavily salted and contained too much sugar, it didn’t matter whether the toddler’s meal was organic or otherwise.

About 72 per cent of toddler dinners were high in sodium, with more than 210 milligrams per single serving, The pasta meals were often the highest in sodium, because it’s added to both the grain and sauce. Sodium is directly related to blood pressure, which in adulthood becomes a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Another 32 per cent of toddler dinners and most toddler cereal bars, infant or toddler snacks, desserts and juices had one or more added sugars, defined as more than 35 per cent of calories per portion coming from sugar. Having too much sugar in the blood for long periods of time can cause serious health problems.

"Reducing excessive sodium and added sugar from birth to 24 months can help set taste preferences and lead to better health for children now and as they grow," the study’s authors wrote.

According to supporters of agrichemical biotechnology, the World Health Organization (WHO) position is that GMO foods are safe. That's not true. The IAASTD Global Report, co-sponsored by the WHO and six other world organizations, states GMOs have NOT been proven safe.

For years, the public has been assured that the chemical glyphosate was safe whether it was found in the environment or in our fresh water supply or in the processed food we feed our families. As a result, farmers spray more than 185 million pounds of glyphosate-based herbicides, particularly Monsanto’s Roundup, on food crops in North America The questionable agrochemical is also the third most commonly used herbicide for industrial and commercial land and the second most commonly used herbicide in the home and garden. A whopping twenty-five million applications are spread on yards within easy reach of children, pregnant women, the elderly and pets, every year. In short, this herbicide is everywhere. So why the concern? Turns out the industry reports behind glyphosate's safety may have been overstated.

In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IRAC) reviewed the latest non-industry-funded science and concluded that glyphosate must be labeled a “probable human carcinogen” based on the findings suggesting glyphosate increases the risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Independent science has been sounding the alarm for years. Glyphosate has been implicated in over 40 plant diseases; commercial grade glyphosate attacks mammals in the liver and intestines by decreasing the activity of two detoxification enzymes; a report dating back to 2011 found regulators knew as long ago as 1980 that glyphosate can cause birth defects in laboratory animals and that the European Commission has known that glyphosate causes malformations since 2002. Yet the information was never made public.

In Argentina, currently the second largest producer of transgenic BT soy in the world and a major user of Roundup, amphibian embryos are exhibiting defects in their brain, intestines and heart. Farmworkers are becoming ill and their children are born with devastating birth defects. Concerned scientists discovered the herbicide increased the activity of a particular “signalling pathway” that turns off the genes that are needed for normal embryological development. Three countries, across multiple continents are experiencing an inexplicable epidemic. Dubbed as CKDu, Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin has attacked and killed thousands of field workers, primarily young males. The disease is spreading so quickly, it's estimated that it now affects 15 percent of field workers - that's 400,000 people. Glyphosate has been implicated.

Undoubtedly, farmworkers face the highest exposures, but low levels of glyphosate are present in our food and drinking water and that could pose a serious threat to our well being. The problem is not acute, its the accumulation of the chemical that may pose the greatest threat. Studies have found glyphosate accumulates in soy and is present in thousands of nonorganic packaged foods including those labelled 'natural'. It is also in animal feed for livestock like pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys and fish so that means it's in the meat aisles of our grocery stores.

IRAC also determined insecticides malathion and diazinon are probable human carcinogens. These bug-killing chemicals are most often found on nonorganic strawberries, celery, and cilantro. An argument to purchase organic if there ever was one.

Despite all the input from independent science, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just gave the green light to allow farmers in nine more states to use a new glyphosate-containing pesticide called Enlist Duo. The new weedkiller also contains 2,4-D, an old-school, toxic chemical that's also linked to cancer. Enlist Duo's two active ingredients, 2,4-D and glyphosate, have both been shown to increase the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

But here's the real kicker, the stuff doesn't work! Genetically engineering crop seeds are engineered to live through dense herbicide sprayings that normally would kill the crop. But spraying BT crops is a failed technology and a losing battle. Just as overusing antibiotics led to hard-to-kill, antibiotic-resistant super germs, abusing weed killers has fuelled the emergence of nearly impossible-to-kill super weeds.

When GE technology was first introduced, chemical companies touted the technology as a way to reduce chemical use on food crops. But Professor Chuck Benbrook, PhD, a research professor at Washington State University, recently found that between 1996 and 2011, GMO technology actually increased herbicide use by 527 million pounds—that's an 11 percent increase -- for every pound less of insecticide used, farmers used four pounds more of herbicides.

The weight of evidence is indicating something is going seriously wrong and glyphosate could be playing a role. Surely it's time stop its commercial distribution until we can get a clear picture of its safety. Likely? Unfortunately until the public starts making some serious noise, particularly around election time, nothing is going to change.

These companies are fighting labelling initiatives of genetically engineered ingredients in food by collectively spending millions to create misleading messages in the media. Why? Cheap suspect ingredients resulting in enormous profits is a good place to start. Most consumers are totally unaware that they are purchasing food laced with pesticide residue or include genetically modified ingredients. We can change this if we vote with your shopping dollar. Don't purchase these brands. Pain in the ass Yes!! But your health and the health of your family will reward you.

For the one or two people on the continent who don’t know Dr. Mehmet Oz, he is a respected cardiothoracic surgeon with his own TV show. With almost 1000 shows under his belt, Dr Oz has been dubbed ‘America’s doctor’ . He's known for his belief that western medicine can be reductive focussing on illness instead of health; he supports the need for a deeper connection with patients; he has given considered opinions on alternative approaches to cure and prevent illness; and yes, sometimes he's gone afield of what many professionals in his field would consider sound medical advice. But then again he would be the first to say his show is not about medicine per se, it's about self empowerment. He is also a vocal advocate for labelling GMO foods and believes glyphosate, an agrochemical used in the biofood industry, is a serious threat to public health. That philosophy, perhaps more than any other, has placed him in the crosshairs of some very powerful people.

Dr. Oz holds the surgery department vice chair at Columbia University. He has held that position for over 20 years. Recently he received a letter from 10 doctors calling on Columbia to fire him from his post. The letter states his “presence on the faculty of a prestigious medical institution unacceptable.” and “We are surprised and dismayed that Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons would permit Dr. Mehmet Oz to occupy a faculty appointment, let alone a senior administrative position in the Department of Surgery.” They claim the television personality has "repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops”….. and there you have the first hint.

The New York Times pointed out that some of the doctors who signed the letter are connected with the American Council on Science and Health, a pro-industry advocacy group that supports genetically modified foods. To be clear, Oz does not claim that GMO foods are dangerous, but he does believe that they should be labeled, just like they are in over 64 countries around the world. His response to the letter was swift.

In the past, Oz has had his share of controversy. One questionable claim about a weight-loss product landed him in front of a Senate subcommittee hearing. But this accusatory letter carries the invisible watermark of the chemical barons who control the GMO seed and agrochemical industry. Aside from their questionable genetic practices and controversial biofood ingredients, their best selling agrochemical, glyphosate, is under attack. At one time the industry claimed glyphosate was as safe as aspirin which undoubtedly helped the herbicide become the world's best selling herbicide. But in March 2015, a division of the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen. Argentina’s union of 30,000 doctors and health professionals, FESPROSA, issued a statement in support of that decision. Argentina is currently the second biggest producer of transgenic BT soy in the world. To pay back its foreign debt, the country adopted an industrial agriculture export model and the use of glyphosate skyrocketed at great cost to the country's fieldworker health. These hardworking citizens have experienced a three-fold increase in birth defects and cancer rates increased fourfold and many health professionals and independent scientists believe glyphosate is implicated.

Dr Oz became a vocal opponent to glyphosate in response to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval to a newly engineered bioseed and chemical spray called Enlist Duo. Created by Dow AgroSciences to combat weed resistance, the two active ingredients, 2,4-D and glyphosate, are linked to a higher risk of contracting non-Hodgkins lymphoma as well as other serious health issues. Despite all the input from independent scientists around the world about the dangers of 2,4-D, the EPA gave the green light to Dow for commercial use in 2014. Canadian officials approved commercial application of Enlist Duo in 2013.

Dr Oz started a petition on his TV show calling on President Obama to block approval of the highly toxic herbicide. The petition garnered over 115,000 signatures. That's the second hint as to why Dr Oz is such a threat. Oz is not only smart, he's influential and that's a combination that threatens an industry that makes billions in profits annually by selling questionable chemicals.

These chemical barons have a long history of trying to silence those who are vocal and influential. As far back as the early 1990s, they were casting a wide net to suppress independent science and freedom of speech.Dr. Arpad Pusztai, is a Biochemist and Nutritionist In the early 90s, he was awarded a $3 million grant by the UK government to design the system for safety testing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Within 10 days, the test mammals that were fed GMO fodder developed pre-cancerous cell growth, smaller testicles, partially atrophied livers and damaged immune systems.

Dr Pusztai saw a public health crisis in the making. Worried that GM foods may have similar affects on humans, with permission from his director, Pusztai gave an interview on TV and expressed his concerns. He became an instant hero at his institute -- for two days.

A phone call from the pro-GMO prime minister’s office to the institute’s director resulted in the firing of Pusztai. He was threatened with a lawsuit if he continued to speak out about his concerns and his team was dismantled. Then the smear campaign started. The Institute that had employed him for 35 years, together with the biotech industry that funded research at the Institute and the UK government launched a campaign to destroy Pusztai’s reputation. Eventually, the British parliament lifted his gag order and his research was published in the prestigious Lancet, but not before he and his wife lost their jobs, their livelihood and their reputations.

Embryologist Andrés Carrasco told a leading Buenos Aires newspaper about the results of his research into Roundup, the glyphosate herbicide sold in conjunction with Monsanto’s genetically engineered Roundup Ready crops. His studies of amphibians suggested that the herbicide could cause defects in the brain, intestines, and hearts of fetuses. His concern was the amount of Roundup used on GM soy fields was as much as 1,500 times greater than that which created the defects. The biotech industry mounted an attack on Carrasco, ridiculing his research and even issued personal threats.

Epidemiologist Judy Carman investigated outbreaks of disease for a state government in Australia. She knew that health problems associated with GM foods may take decades to discover because the onset of disease is not acute - it's chronic. Moreover, the short-term animal feeding studies usually did not evaluate “biochemistry, immunology, tissue pathology, gut function, liver function, and kidney function” and were too short to test for cancer or reproductive or child health.

Carman was awarded a grant by the Western Australia government to conduct a long-term animal feeding studies on GMOs. GMO advocates demanded the grant be withdrawn. When the Western Australian Government refused to withdraw the grant, opponents successfully interfered with Carman’s relationship with the university where she was to do the research.

In February 2004, prominent virologist Terje Traavik presented preliminary data at a meeting at the UN Biosafety Protocol Conference. The data demonstrated that Filipinos living next to a GM cornfield developed serious symptoms while the corn was pollinating; that genetic material inserted into GM crops transferred to rat organs after a single meal; and key safety assumptions about genetically engineered viruses were overturned, calling into question the safety of using these viruses in vaccines.

The biotech industry attacked Dr. Traavik stating he presented unpublished work. But presenting preliminary data at professional conferences is a long-standing tradition in science. The biotech industry relied on in 1999 to try to counter the evidence that butterflies were endangered by GM corn.

In 2014, the New Yorker reported Syngenta was orchestrating attacks scientists whose studies have shown atrazine to have adverse effects on the environment and/or human and animal health including Professor Tyrone Hayes, PhD, an amphibian expert at University of California, Berkeley. Hayes was contracted to determine the affects of atrazine on frogs. He discovered males exposed to this endocrine disrupter would develop eggs or ovaries in their testes, or the amphibians would turn into hermaphrodites. Further study showed that sometimes the frogs completely turned into females. When he presented the data, Hayes claimed the manufacturer, Syngenta, wanted him to manipulate the data and keep his original findings under wrap. Instead of being intimidated, Hayes started his own campaign and that put the good professor squarely in the cross hairs of the giant chemical company. Syngenta criticized Hayes' science and conduct in press releases, letters to the editor, and through a formal ethics complaint filed at University of California-Berkeley.

There's a reason the chemical barons are so quick on the draw. The market value of the agrochemical industry is $42 Billion annually. So it's little wonder these deep-pocketed corporations go to great lengths to suppress independent scientific investigation. They've been known to block independent research by withholding GM seeds and genes or threaten to withdraw funding from the universities or they resort to sullying the reputations of reputable scientists. The millions they spend on lobbying our governments is another matter entirely.

The close ties that have developed between bio science, commerce and governments have created a protective moat around industrial agriculture. The most common claim is that they are protecting intellectual property. But the cultivation, distribution and manufacturing of food needs to be held to a higher standard than commerce. If GMO foods are as safe as the pundits claim, why not encourage independent research to support their claim? What are they trying to hide? If biofoods are safe why not label it as such - that marketing messaging should be worth millions in sales. So what do they fight labelling initiatives instead? Forty-two billion dollars in sales is certainly part of the answer. If it's labelled no one will buy it is another. Over 80% of consumers in Canada and the US want GMO ingredients listed on food labels.

People like Dr Oz is a threat because he's not only smart, he's influential. Millions of Americans and Canadians listen to his advice about cultivating conscious choice. That spells trouble for the chemical barons. The last thing they want is an audience of millions thinking for themselves and making the conscious choice about not purchasing GMO laced and pesticide infested biofoods.

Today, there is approximately 10,400 pesticides approved by the EPA on ‘conditional registration’. This fast track, toxic treadmill allows pesticide manufacturers to get products to market without fully testing all the active ingredients for health or environmental impact and that's a danger to us all.

"Over the past 30 years, more than 100,000 chemicals have been approved for commercial use in the United States. Among these are more than 82,000 industrial chemicals, 9,000 food additives, 3,000 cosmetic ingredients, 1,000 pesticide active ingredients and 3,000 pharmaceutical drugs...due to funding constraints and industry litigation, in the years since the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act (TCA) was passed, the EPA has been able to require safety testing on only about 200 of the 84,000 chemicals listed on the TSCA chemical inventory."

The monolithic chemical company, Monsanto, is at it yet again. This time, they are trying to convince the world that glyphosate, their number one selling herbicide, is not a probable carcinogen as defined by World Health Organization report published earlier this year.

According to Reuters, a 16-member panel, assembled by Intertek Scientific & Regulatory Consultancy will present its findings to the annual meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis on Monday. Their study will be published the study at a later date after peer review.

The group says the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) misinterpreted or incorrectly weighted some of the data it reviewed and ignored other data before classifying glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, according to an abstract of its findings.

So how objective are the findings? The panel is anything but impartial. Monsanto paid Intertek for the panel's work.Ten of the 16 scientists on the Intertek panel have been consultants for Monsanto in the past and two others are former Monsanto employees, according to a roster published on Monsanto's website.

But then again objective science is not Monsanto's goal - declining sales are the slings and arrows behind this attempt to debunk the World Health Organization. Monsanto is continuing to lose profits into the second quarter of 2015, shedding an exceptional 15% profit amid falling GMO seed sale.

The WHO report indicated studies “sufficiently demonstrated” that glyphosate caused cancer in animals. And, according to multiple reports, Monsanto was well aware that this chemical caused cancer for decades yet still continued to sell it.

Earlier in the year, over 30,000 doctors and health experts throughout Latin America are demanding that Monsanto’s products be banned. One of the primary cases that these doctors are bringing against Monsanto is the recent confirmation that their main herbicide RoundUp is actually responsible for causing cancer.

Concerns about glyphosate on food have also been a hot topic of debate in the United States contributing to the passage last year in Vermont of the country's first mandatory labeling law for foods that are genetically modified. In Europe, France has banned Roundup's use

Critics say that industry-linked scientists are downplaying the risk to human health and trying to discredit the IARC report by casting doubt on some of the scientific studies that it reviewed.

The European Commission has ordered a ground-breaking moratorium on two endocrine-disrupting weedkillers that have been linked to thyroid cancer, infertility, reproductive problems and foetal malformations.

Use of Amitrole and Isoproturon will now be banned from September 30 across Europe, after an EU committee voted unanimously for the first ever ban on endocrine-disrupting herbicides.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the hormone system. Scientific studies indicate that they can cause cancerous tumours, birth defects and a range of ailments related to gender, sex and reproductive systems.

Hans Muilerman, chemicals officer at Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe, said: “This is a historic decision as it is clear that these chemicals are 100% endocrine disruptors. We applaud these two proposals but at the same time note that a large reservoir of harmful, classified and endocrine-disrupting pesticides is still waiting for a decision, which has been repeatedly postponed by the commission.”

While this is good news for Europeans, here in Canada and the US, many endocrine-disrupting weed killers remain widely used on food crops and in public parks. Regardless of where application occurs, one thing is certain, these dangerous and deadly chemicals make their way into our drinking water, our food and even in the air we all breathe.

According to the FDA, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), which includes so-called "smart" and "edible" types of packaging has made great strides over the past decade or so, and has "greatly improved the quality and shelf-stability" of otherwise highly perishable produce.

While that may sound promising to industrial food types, to consumers these types of coatings do present a very real potential health hazard. The FDA openly admits that edible coatings have been associated with a number of problems including anaerobic fermentation of apples and bananas, rapid weight loss of tomatoes, rapid decay in cucumbers as well as the potential for growth of food borne pathogens.

While the verdict is still out on edible coatings, if you have a choice, why would you opt to eat fruits and vegetables that have been coated in a rubbery film? Buy local when possible and don't forget to ask your server at your favorite eatery if the salad bar contains vegetables that have been plasticized. If buying local is not an option, ask your grocer if the fruits and vegetables have a coating applied. Food Safety Magazine published an interesting study on food recalls. The publication tallied recalls from 2015 data from three different agencies—the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS), and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The results produced some interesting and disturbing insights.

According to the report, the good citizens of Canada and the US experienced 629 food recalls in 2015. One third of the total recalls was due to common, repeat allergens - wheat, eggs, peanuts and dairy. Other allergens included soy, sulfites and various types of tree nuts—almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews and pistachios. Milk was one of the most undeclared food allergens.

Microbiological contamination was equally disturbing. In May 2015, evidence of Clostridium botulinum, a potentially lethal neurotoxin that paralyzes muscles was discovered in canned seafood. At the time, the recall was blamed on an unnamed pathogen. Fast-forward five months and 14 more canned seafood products were recalled between October 9 and November 10 -- primarily of cans of albacore tuna and salmon.

In July 2015 saw the merger of Kraft Foods Group and H.J. Heinz Company. The new company, Kraft Heinz Company had an abysmal food safety record. Barbecue sauce, Oscar Mayer turkey bacon and even their iconic Kraft slices were all subject to recall.

Even bottled water wasn't exempt. In June of that year, Niagara Bottling LLC recalled bottled water because Escherichia coli may have been present due to exposure to human or animal waste at two Pennsylvania plants. The recall affected over 14 different brands.

Contamination of fresh produce can occur at several stages across the production chain, including harvesting from the field or orchard, transporting, processing, distribution or marketing at the grocery store. The report cites seven apple recalls. All but one was due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Other recalls included Dole recalling bagged spinach in 13 states due to salmonella bacteria and in April, prepared foods that were sold at a number of major retailers, including Target and Costco were recalled because the products contained spinach potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Most cases of product recalls or food contamination incidents have fairly identifiable causes. Sometimes a product gets into the wrong package, or something gets left out of a label or the label is misrepresenting a fact. That was the case with a General Mills recall. The corporation recalled two of their most popular cereals — original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. The boxes were labeled as “gluten-free” but breakfast foods contained wheat.

Sometimes, it’s a mystery how the contamination occurred. Food companies in question often respond before the full scope of the contamination can be traced in order to keep exposure and bad press to a minimum. In the beginning of June 2016, General Mills issued a voluntary recall of 10 MILLION pounds of flour because of a suspected health threat risk although there was no clear evidence of cross-contamination. In that same time frame, a century-old Tennessee company, Grain Craft, announced “the intermittent presence of peanuts” in their soft red winter wheat. The FDA tested the Grain Craft mill in question and found no peanut protein, meaning the contamination happened after harvest and processing.

Grain Craft is among the largest independent flour millers in the United States. They don't sell to the public, they sell to the food processors, so the potential for numerous popular brands and food types to be affected by the cross-contamination is very real. On June 3, 2016 the first commercial food processor pulled their products that used Grain Craft's flour, Hostess recalled over 700,000 products containing the suspect flour after receiving two adverse events involving children with peanut allergies who suffered immediate allergic reactions after consuming Hostess donut products. Further testing on other shipments of flour from the same supplier as well as finished products revealed low level peanut residues. Kellogg and Pepsi Co also issued a massive recall of products that use Grain Craft flour. Grain Craft has recalled the affected flour.

On the same day of the General Mills recall, Kashi, owned by Kellogg, announced a major recall of one variety each of its granola and granola bars The bars in question contained ingredients made from sunflower kernels potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytongenes bacteria. The recall was part of an expanded recall by multi national SunOpta Corp which specializes in organic, non-genetically modified foods.

Whether the contamination occurs in the field, or on the factory floor, clearly, there is a lot of room for improvement on behalf of both the food industry and our regulators. An estimated 35 million people suffer from serious food allergies in North America and Europe. One out of six people will get sick from contaminated food every year - that's simply unacceptable.

As a conscious consumer, be aware that Intercontinental shipping of animal and food products exposes an inherent flaw in the industrial food sector. The business model enables the spread of food borne disease in a relatively short amount of time. To make a change, start by supporting local and regional farmers. Choose fresh regional produce instead of produce commonly sold in large grocery chains where much of the produce is imported. If you eat meat, choose regionally raised, organic, grass-fed/pasture-raised beef, poultry and dairy. And be aware that while some grocery stores carry organic foods, many items are imported.
